PURCHASE
Price-wise, online platforms like Lazada or Shopee offer the cheapest bathroom fittings. If you desire convenience, good service and better quality, check out the shops along the famous Balestier Road which sell all types of bathroom accessories and fixtures (with installation included for a fee).

Hafary, a leading floor and tile retailer in Singapore (also with a store along Balestier Road), occasionally hold warehouse sales for bathroom fittings. Check their Facebook page regularly to spot their promotions.

BATHROOM OVERLAY
Overlay (laying new tiles or vinyl over the old tiles) is much cheaper than hacking the old tiles and laying new ones. Considerations include ensuring the original tiles are still good condition and waterproof, plus having sufficient space for the new tiles/vinyl to lay over the old ones without excessive protrusion.

You can also paint over tiles with a special type of primer and paint.

SHOWERS
The mixer regulates the shower water temperature and is sometimes sold separately from the showerhead. One type is inside the wall (requires expensive hacking to install) and another is placed outside the wall (very practical but not as aesthetically pleasing for some).

You can upgrade the showerhead to a hotel-type rain shower. Exposed rain shower systems are popular since they require no hacking and are easy to replace.

TOILET BOWLS
Replacing a toilet bowl costs a few hundred dollars at least, depending on labour costs. A affordable way of refreshing the bathroom is to replace the toilet seat cover with a soft-close toilet seat cover which can be bought at most hardware stores.

SINKS & TAPS
Changing the sinks/wash basins and taps/faucets can also do wonders for your bathroom look. A wide variety of these fixtures are available online and at many bathroom shops (including along Balestier Road).

The watertrap is the plug/stopper for the sink. The bottle trap is the bulge in the pipe below the sink which prevents gas contamination coming up from the sewerage and also to catch loose hair or retrieve items you accidentally drop (e.g. jewellery). If you purchase a basin online, ensure both the watertrap and bottletrap are provided.

FLOOR STRAINERS (FLOORTRAPS)
You can upgrade typical floor strainers (floortraps) to concealed floor traps (for more elegant look) or bouncing floor traps (for added convenience). Note that these require a contractor/plumber to install.

MOULD PREVENTION
It is paramount to keep moisture out of your bathroom as it will cause mould to form — An ugly sight which (more importantly) may attract booklice to feed on it, and this booklice infestation may even spread to your bedroom.

The most cost-efficient method to remove moisture and keep your bathroom well-ventilated is to keep the bathroom window open with an installed insect screen (See: Windows).

An electric dehumidifer is also effective yet needs a power socket so you will need to run the power cable from your bedroom into the bathroom where it is placed. An expensive but highly efficient method is to install a ventilator fan (See: Home Appliances).

Alternatively, you can place a disposable dehumidifier/moisture remover in there (See: Disposable Humidifier / Moisture Absorber). However, this is not effective considering how humid a bathroom gets.
